CA Foundation Preparation Strategy for Jan 2027 Attempt: Study Plan, Timetable & Tips

By HJ Classes 21 Sep 2026 9 Min Read 9 Views

If you're aiming for the January 2027 attempt, the clock is already running. ICAI has announced that the CA Foundation exams will be held on 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th January 2027 — roughly 10 weeks from today. That's enough time to clear the exam, but only with a plan. This guide gives you a practical day-wise strategy: what to study, in what order, and how to use the final weeks. A short section for parents is included at the end.

01 Know the Exam Before You Plan for It

A good strategy starts with the paper pattern.

Wild guessing hurts. In the MCQ papers, attempt what you're confident about first. Only guess when you can eliminate at least two options.

02 Complete Your Registration & Exam Form

Before studying, tick off the paperwork — a late fee or portal glitch is the worst reason to lose an attempt.

  • Make sure your CA Foundation registration is valid.
  • Watch for the exam form window: the Jan 2027 application process begins on 3 November 2026, submitted online through ICAI's Self Service Portal.
  • Fill the form well before the deadline so a late fee or a technical glitch doesn't derail your attempt.

Complete payment and keep the confirmation receipt for your records.

Tip: Fill the form early, well before the last date, so a portal glitch never puts your attempt at risk. Always confirm the latest dates and fees at icai.org.

03 Follow the 10-Week Study Plan

Divide the time to the exam into four phases. Each one has a single job — don't let them bleed into each other.

Phase 1
Weeks 1 – 4
Learn the Concepts
  • Cover full syllabus once, paper by paper
  • Accounting first, daily
  • Quant practice daily
  • Law & Economics notes
Phase 2
Weeks 5 – 7
Revise & Practise
  • Revise with questions
  • Past papers, RTPs, MTPs
  • Formula one-pagers
  • Keep an error notebook
Phase 3
Weeks 8 – 9
Mocks & Analysis
  • Full-length timed mocks
  • Match real exam timings
  • Analyse every mistake
  • Fix weak chapters
Phase 4
Week 10
Final Revision
  • No new topics
  • Short notes & formulas
  • Re-read error notebook
  • Sleep and routine
Gate 1 · End of Week 4
Full syllabus covered once
Gate 2 · End of Week 7
Question practice done
Gate 3 · End of Week 9
Mock scores steady

Phase 1 · Learn the Concepts (Weeks 1 – 4)

Cover the whole syllabus once, paper by paper. Give your weakest subjects the best study hours.

  • Accounting. Start here, because it needs the most hands-on practice. Do journal entries, final accounts, partnership and depreciation by writing, not just watching.
  • Quantitative Aptitude. Practise a little every day. Ratios, time-speed-work and statistics stick only with repetition.
  • Business Laws. Read each section, then note down the key provisions and case examples.
  • Economics and BCK. Build understanding with diagrams and real examples — these are scoring subjects in MCQ papers.

Phase 2 · Revise & Practise (Weeks 5 – 7)

Go through the syllabus a second time, this time with a pen and a question paper.

  • Solve ICAI's past papers and RTPs/MTPs for every subject.
  • Make one-page formula & provision sheets for quick review.
  • Keep an "error notebook" where you log every mistake and why you made it.

Phase 3 · Mocks & Analysis (Weeks 8 – 9)

This is where most of the marks are won or lost. Attempt full-length mocks at the real exam timing — 2 PM to 5 PM for Papers 1 and 2, 2 PM to 4 PM for Papers 3 and 4. Then spend as long analysing the paper as you did writing it. A graded test series shows which chapters are costing you marks.

Phase 4 · Final Revision (Week 10)

No new topics. Revise formulas, case laws, error-notebook entries and short notes. Sleep properly and keep your routine steady.

04 A Sample Daily Timetable

Adjust this to your own energy levels. Target 8 – 9 focused hours, with a 10-minute break after every 90 minutes.

6:30 – 8:30 AM
AccountingConcept + practice
9:00 – 11:00 AM
Quantitative AptitudeDaily problem practice
11:30 AM – 1:30 PM
Lectures · Law / EconomicsReading and notes
2:30 – 4:30 PM

5:00 – 6:30 PM
BCR / BCK or a breakReading, exercise
7:30 – 9:30 PM

Rotate subjects daily — variety keeps your mind sharper than long single-subject marathons.

05 Paper-Wise Tips to Score Higher

Paper 1

Accounting

Present neat working notes — step marks matter in descriptive papers. Practise 10 – 15 problems per chapter.

Paper 2

Business Laws

Learn the sections with a short example for each. Writing answers in points with headings reads better than a block of text.

Paper 2

BCR

Practise formats — notices, reports, emails. Easy marks if you know the structure cold.

Paper 3

Quantitative Aptitude

Speed matters. Learn shortcuts, but only after you understand the logic behind them.

Paper 4

Economics & BCK

Read widely. A quick daily skim of one business newspaper helps with BCK questions.

MCQ rule

No wild guesses

Attempt what you're confident about first. Negative marking in Papers 3 & 4 can wipe out your gains.

06 5 Common Mistakes to Avoid

!
Starting late on Accounting and Maths. These need practice time — cramming doesn't work.
!
Skipping mock tests. Reading notes feels productive, but only timed practice shows your real level.
!
Ignoring negative marking. Wrong guesses in Papers 3 and 4 can wipe out your gains.
!
Studying only favourite subjects. A 40% minimum in every paper means weak subjects can sink the attempt.
!
Trusting rumours over official updates. Check ICAI's announcements for any change to dates or rules.

07 A Note for Parents

You can help your child more by creating the right environment than by supervising every hour. A few practical ways:

Protect study hours

Keep them quiet and free from family errands and social pressure.

Focus on effort, not marks

Mock scores fluctuate — treat them as feedback, not verdicts.

Watch for burnout

Make sure your child eats, sleeps and takes short breaks.

Ask the right questions

"What did you find hard this week?" works better than "Why did you score less?"

Support good guidance

A mentor or coaching programme that tracks progress reduces your child's stress — and yours.

08 Exam-Week Checklist

Last 7 days — do these in order
  • Print and verify your admit card as soon as it's released.
  • Visit your exam centre beforehand if possible — Jan 2027 exams will be held in 207 cities across India.
  • Pack your admit card, ID and approved stationery the night before.
  • Don't change your routine — eat light and sleep well.
  • Remember that exams go ahead as scheduled even on public holidays.

09 Final Thoughts

Ten weeks is workable if you divide it well: learn the concepts first, revise with practice, then spend two full weeks on mocks and final revision. Stay consistent, track your mistakes and keep your health on track — the January 2027 attempt is well within reach.
