CA Inter Costing Preparation Strategy for Jan 2027: Complete Study Plan

By HJ Classes 07 Sep 2026 8 Min Read 16 Views

CA Inter Costing preparation for January 2027 works best when you treat Cost and Management Accounting as a skill, not a subject to read. You learn the formats and formulas, then solve every question type until the method becomes automatic. This guide, prepared by the HJ Classes academic team, gives you a day-wise 90-day plan that you can scale to the days you have left, a chapter priority list, a four-step method for numericals and a revision system.

01 CA Inter Jan 2027 Exam Dates What the Costing Paper Tests

ICAI's notice dated 23 September 2026 places CA Inter Group II on 8, 10 and 12 January 2027, from 2 pm to 5 pm. Cost and Management Accounting (Paper 4) was the first Group II paper in January 2026, so expect it on 8 January — but confirm the date on your admit card. That makes Costing your earliest Group II paper, and the one that must be exam-ready first.

Marks & Time
100 marks  ·  3 hours

40% in the paper  +  50% aggregate for the group
Question Style
Application-based numericals, short theory and lengthy MCQs
Costing is a skill paper. Marks come from choosing the right format, applying formulas correctly and showing clean working — reading alone does not build that. Keep a buffer in your plan: ICAI has moved a paper at short notice before, so follow ICAI announcements.

02 CA Inter Costing Study Plan

The plan runs in four phases and counts in days from the day you start, so it works whenever you read this.

Phase 1
Day 1 – 28
Core concepts
2 h/day≈ 56 h
Introduction, material, employee cost, overheads, ABC, cost sheet
Phase 2
Day 29 – 52
Methods
2.5 h/day≈ 60 h
Cost accounting systems, unit & batch, job, process & operation, joint & by-products, service
Phase 3
Day 53 – 68
Decision tools
2.5 h/day≈ 40 h
Standard costing, marginal costing, budgets
Phase 4
Day 69 – 90
Revise & simulate
3 h/day≈ 66 h
Whole syllabus — three revision rounds + timed papers
Total commitment
90 days  ·  ≈ 222 hours
Gate 1 · Day 28
Cost sheet solved cold
Gate 2 · Day 52
Every method practised
Gate 3 · Day 68
Full syllabus covered

Keep the same proportions and count from the day you start.

With fewer days, cover Tier 1 and Tier 2 chapters first (see below) and always protect Phase 4.

03 Which Costing Chapters to Prioritise?

Learn in book order, because later chapters build on earlier ones. Revise in priority order. The tiers below are HJ Classes' suggestion based on how the paper tests concepts, not official ICAI weightage — cross-check them against the latest ICAI question paper analysis.

Tier 1

Master first

Standard costing (variances), marginal costing, process costing with joint & by-products, cost sheet

Why: Numerically heavy, with several sub-types each, and rewarding once the format is clear.

Tier 2

Cover fully

Material, employee cost, overheads & ABC, job & batch costing, budgets, cost accounting systems

Why: Large volume with predictable question patterns.

Tier 3

Quick wins

Introduction to CMA, service costing

Why: Short chapters that are easy to finish well.

04 Solve Every Costing Numerical in Four Steps

01
Classify

Which method or tool? What is asked?

Common slip: wrong method picked
02
Set the format

Draw the statement or table before calculating.

Common slip: messy layout
03
Compute

One working note per figure, units clear.

Common slip: steps not shown
04
Check

Tie out totals, then state the answer.

Common slip: totals not tied out

Step 2 is the one most students skip. Drawing the statement or table before calculating keeps your working organised, makes errors easy to spot and shows the examiner your logic. For each chapter, build a one-page method sheet with the format, the key formulas and a short list of traps — such as normal versus abnormal loss in process costing.

05 Practice and Revision System

  • Solve by question type. Mix statement questions (cost sheet, process account), formula-application (variances, CVP), reconciliations and short theory or MCQs.
  • Keep an error log. Tag each mistake as formula, arithmetic or format — the tag tells you what to fix.
  • Use official sources first. ICAI study material, RTPs, MTPs and past papers from the ICAI BoS portal, then add a graded series like the HJ Classes CA Inter test series.
  • Revise in three rounds. Round 1 from method sheets, Round 2 by re-solving past mistakes, Round 3 as a quick recall of formulas and formats.
  • Simulate the exam. At least four full 3-hour papers in Phase 4, starting with your strongest question and keeping ten minutes to check totals.
Last-week checklist — the final 7 days before your Costing paper
  • Re-solve every entry in your error log
  • Revise variance formulas and CVP relationships
  • Redraw the formats for process costing, joint products and cost sheet from memory
  • Do one last timed paper at least three days before the exam
  • Pack your admit card, ID, calculator and spare batteries the night before

06 Planning Costing Alongside Audit and FM-SM

Because Costing comes first in Group II, finish its revision cycle early and then rotate your main focus to the other two papers. Keep a 30-minute daily Costing problem set going meanwhile, since numerical speed fades without practice. For the next paper, use the same day-wise approach in our CA Inter Audit preparation strategy, or study all of Group II together with the Group 2 recorded combo.

07 6 Mistakes That Cost Marks in CA Inter Costing

!
Memorising formulas without solving. Recall is useless if you cannot apply it under time pressure.
!
Skipping the format. A neat statement protects you from silly errors.
!
Ignoring Tier 3 chapters. They are short, and the marks are easy.
!
Leaving budgets and standard costing to the end. They need repeated practice, not a last-week glance.
!
Not showing working notes. Unexplained numbers cannot earn partial credit.
!
Taking no timed papers. Accuracy at speed is a separate skill.

08 Stuck on Variances or Process Costing?

These are the chapters where many students want a worked example rather than another solution to read. CA Harshad Jaju teaches Costing at HJ Classes — you can pair his lectures with Phases 1 to 3 of this plan. Pick the line that matches where you are:

09 Final Words — Start With Day 1, Not With Perfect Notes

A strong Costing attempt is built from daily solving, clean formats and timed practice. Pick your row in the scaling table, start your first phase today and book your first chapter test before Phase 2 ends.

10 Frequently Asked Questions

Is CA Inter Costing difficult?

It is practical rather than difficult. Students who solve regularly and keep formats ready usually find it one of the more scoring papers.

How many hours a day should I study Costing?

About 2 to 3 hours, rising towards the exam — roughly 222 hours on a full 90-day plan.

Can I prepare Costing in 30 days?

Yes, if you start with Tier 1 and Tier 2 chapters, use method sheets and solve daily. Follow the 30-day row of the scaling table.

Is a formula sheet enough?

No. Formulas help, but formats and question practice decide your marks.

When is the Costing exam?

Group II runs on 8, 10 and 12 January 2027, and Costing is expected on 8 January. Confirm it on your admit card.
